Just a short walk from the iron bridge, the C19 Bowers Yard industrial site included the limekilns, a crushing plant and a railway sidings with loading facilities that saw thousands of tons of limestone from the Benthall Edge Quarries burnt to produce lime for the region's busy construction industry. The limekiln was originally built during the mid1800s and was fully operational until the1870s, after which it fell into disrepair. The site enjoyed a brief renaissance in the mid C 20 before the plant finally closed.
Cbs worked closely with the client, The Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, and the project engineer, Julie Holmes of Telford and Wrekin Council to develop a repair strategy that would not only conserve the structure but provide a safe visitor environment, allowing people to get much closer to the structure than previously anticipated.
