Cbs are working with conservation architect John Wheatley and structural engineer Ron Mace of Shire Consulting to conserve and repair very significant elements of stone masonry, structural timber and tiled roof slopes.
The church was largely built during the Norman period (1066-1154), but parts of the nave and north transepts are Saxon (A.D. 597-1066) in origin. The churchyard is probably older than the church itself and its semi-circular shape suggests it was once round and contained a Celtic church.
According to folklore Milburga, the daughter of King Penda of Mercia, founded the church in 680.
The very beautiful watercolour of the church pictured here was painted in the 19th century by John Homes Smith.
